Snowy owl clutch and brood numbers are highly correlated with food supply, and an abundance of prey during the previous year led to a prolific breeding season for these owls of the Arctic. While normally wintering in the Arctic, the increase in competition for food caused by this population boom forces the juvenile owls to migrate further south than usual in search of prey. We have been fortunate in the Pacific Northwest to have several of these rare Arctic nomads visit our shorelines. After a dusting of snow along the shores of Boundary Bay, an owl stirs from roosting to shake off some of the fallen snow.
