This past weekend I took my first trip to San Juan Island in Washington. Located within one of the national historic parks on the island is a prairie. These ecosystems are a real rarity in the Pacific Northwest. It occurs because it lies in the rain shadow of the Olympic Peninsula. I went there with the intention of trying to get a couple shots of the resident foxes, but after several attempts, it seemed as though the foxes would not allow me to approach enough in order to get a decent photo of them. So after several failed attempts, I was walking through the prairie when I spotted another fox. When he spotted me, he turn and walked the other direction (typical of almost all my encounters to this point). So somewhat defeated, I sat down in the tall grass. The fox stop, sat, and stared at me from a distance. Then, unexpectedly, before I even had my camera up, the fox walked right up to me. Somewhat stunned I tried to take some shots. After pausing for a brief moment, he continued on his way. Needless to say, it was the highlight of the trip.
