After a chilly October night, a mother mountain goat and kid greet the morning sun's warm embrace above Perfection Lake. Part of Washington's Alpine Lakes Wilderness, Perfection Lake is once of several alpine lakes located in the Enchantment Lakes Basin. Between the peaks and lakes, Alpine Larches blanket the basin. And in Autumn, while the temperatures drop and days shorten, the larch's needles turn from green to gold (two of my favorite colors), as these deciduous conifers prepare to shed their summer garment.
For myself, this was a long-awaited and much anticipated trip. In order to preserve this incredible wilderness, a limited number of permits are issued to camp here and awarded through a lottery system. And upon entering the basin, it becomes immediately obvious why this area needs to be protected. From the dramatic, jagged peaks to the golden larch adorned, emerald alpine lakes, the Enchantment Lakes is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been fortunate enough to visit.
