In autumn, bull moose, along with other members of the deer family, compete with one another for mating rights. This process begins several months earlier when males begin to grow antlers under a layer of highly vascularized skin. When this skin is shed in late summer and early fall, the underlying bone tissue loses its supply of nutrients and dies. Bull moose use their antlers to intimidate, and when necessary, fight other males for mating privileges. Soon after autumn, the antlers weaken near the base and are shed until the following year, when the process is repeated and new antlers are grown.

This particular bull, with his cow nearby, kept a very close eye on us. We made sure to keep our distance and continued to back up if we noticed any signs that he was becoming agitated. However, several other photographers were much more bold, moving closer to the bull. It bothers me that they placed themselves in a dangerous position, but more because of the stress it was causing the animal.

Amazing shot! When I was there I never saw any moose (which I was looking forward to seeing). Lucky encounter--very nice opportunity. :)

Awesome shot. I wish I could have seen moose while I was in the Tetons earlier this year. Great lighting and excellent composition.
