Located just south of Ambergris Caye, Hol Chan Marine Reserve covers approximately three square miles and is the oldest marine reserve in Belize. Hol Chan, Mayan for 'little channel', is a narrow cut through the barrier reef which links a variety of habitats including the reef, seagrass beds, and mangrove which comprise this marine ecosystem. Here, southern stingrays patrol the seagrass beds in search of prey. The stingrays forage for clams, crabs and other invertebrates as well as small fish.
